BRICKHOUSE FAMILY ASSOCIATION
Greetings Brickhouse Family and Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a safe and joyful holiday season! 2004 was truly a year of changes, some sad, some happy, but God is good and we made it through. After a roller coaster of a pregnancy (4 doctor’s visits a week and conflicting doctors opinions), our beautiful daughter Caelyn Nicole Flor arrived, 2 and a half weeks early, on September 13th weighing in at 6 lbs. 4 oz., 19.5” long. She spent 10 days in the neonatal intensive care unit because her lungs were not fully mature due to my gestational diabetes. Sadly, the day after she came home, my husbands’ grandmother passed away. It was difficult; celebrating the addition of a new baby while grieving for the loss of another loved one. However Caelyn’s arrival was in God’s perfect time, having her helped ease the sadness of my husband and his family.
Not only did we have an addition to our family this fall but my husband Nick and I also bought a house. Anyone who wishes to send information (birth announcements, obituaries, weddings, or just bits of interesting family news) for the newsletter can mail it to: Janel Brickhouse Flor, 232 Ann St., Phoenixville, PA 19460. Nick will be taking over the Brickhouse Family web page (brickhousefamily.com) so that you will be able to contact me through that as well. I am hoping that maybe within the next couple of years with all the new information I will be able to put out a new, updated version of the Family History.
The eighteenth Brickhouse Family Reunion is in the planning phase, information as to where and when will be in the June Newsletter.
From my mother, June
Brickhouse:
I want to thank everyone, from the bottom of my heart, for coming to the reunion last August just to honor my dear husband, Grady Gordon Brickhouse. I would like to thank Sarah Reynolds for hosting it this past year and setting everything up; the speaker, Reverend Joe Wynn, as well as the delicious meal cooked and prepared by Lee Brickhouse. Also I would like to thank the Tyrrell County Genealogical Society for presenting me with a plaque that acknowledged Gordon’s work in the town of Columbia and it’s Library. It took all I had in me just to stand there without breaking down and sobbing in front of everyone. It greatly touched my heart to see how everyone felt about him as a person, not just his work. I had so many people come up to me and give me a hug, telling me how much he has meant to this family; how his hard work and dedicated devotion brought the Brickhouse Family together all these years. His family lineage had been his passion for years before he even put the words in book form. It started out as family trees scribbled on a large sheet of brown paper taped and stretched all down the hall of our apartment. From the first reunion in Chesapeake, to his last one in 2003 in Columbia, NC, he put heart and soul in his search. It was quite an adventure following him around graveyards, churches, secluded wooded areas, back yards of houses, and quaint little towns that no one has ever heard of except the people who lived there: Gumneck, Alligator, and Frying Pan to name a few.
Everyone that we met along the way have become dear friends as well as being related by name. I want to thank everyone for making my visit a lot easier than what I had thought it would be. Your support helped me and my family get through the reunion and the hard year that we had already had before even coming down to Columbia. Every life he touched he left a spark, a curiosity to delve into a search of their own. That’s the way his personality was, a real go-getter, and actually getting things done along the way.
I love the Brickhouse Family, not because of taking that name in marriage, but because you have made me feel more than welcome in this family, and I thank you all again with all my heart.
Sincerely,
June Brickhouse
News from across the Nation:
MARIONVILLE, VA. I would like to thank Mary Thomas, she emailed me with information that the Liberty Hall Farm Cemetery is the resting place of Sallie Brickhouse Nelson and daughter Maria. I know this is in the Brickhouse Family History but to know the location and see the pictures just amazed me. Sallie, sixth generation from George, just seeing the gravestones made me feel as though I was truly connected to them, not as names in a book, but as people who actually walked this earth, the ones who started it all.
NASSAWADOX, VA. Speaking of starting it all, does anyone know where the exact location is of the Quaker Meeting House that George Brickhouse donated in his Will? I did a search on the computer and while his name is mentioned on several websites and that it was in Nassawadox, no one seems to be able to pinpoint it.
LOST- One Jean Chaplin Davis. I received an email in regards to the cemetery at Soundside Church however when I tried to respond I got a message saying this email address was invalid. Please send me an email again with your new address and I will be able to send you the information and if you’re interested, the pictures of the gravestones.
‘BRICKHOUSE FAMILY YEARBOOK’- A couple of people have written to me about something called the ‘Brickhouse Family Yearbook’. From what I know after looking this up on the Internet is that this may be a sham. This company uses telephone directories, birth and death records, etc. to make up their list of family members. The information is then put on a CD ROM and as they said ‘This data is for you to do your own genealogical research’. I don’t believe they took my dad’s book and used his information since the names they have listed are either not in his book or are incorrect.
COLUMBIA- Martha Brickhouse Harrell, 85, died Nov. 20, 2003. Born in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Daniel W. and Olene Lewis Brickhouse and was preceded in death by her son Ray Gibbs.
