Over the past 6 months I
have had a number of requests for information concerning one particular family.
I’m assuming that each person who wrote to me did not know about the other
inquiries but I wanted to share the information I learned.
On July 6, 1840, Samuel
Brickhouse was born to John L. Brickhouse and Dolly Sawyer. Samuel was married
to Nancy Cooper in 1863; unfortunately Nancy died the following year, leaving
behind no children. In 1867, Samuel married again, to Lurina Caroline
Richardson. Lurina gave birth to 7 children: John W.-1867, Henry A.-1869,
Aletha-1870, Nancy Caroline-1872, Pheba-1876, Sammie P.-1877, and Abner
A.-1878. Poor Samuel went through another loss, in 1879 Lurina died. Samuel’s
last marriage in 1879 (not sure if this year is right), was to Sarah Elizabeth
Simmons. She bore 6 children: Avery-1882, Massonia-1880, Ida Bell-1884,
Barbara-1886, Hilda-1901, and Brownis (I think this is supposed to be Brownie)
P.-1895. There is one who is unaccounted for, James Gleen Brickhouse, according
to the date in the book, he was born in 1862, since Samuel’s first marriage
wasn’t until the following year, I’m not sure if this date is correct. If anyone has different information than
what I have here, please send it to me, one of these years I plan on revising
the book.
I’m always amazed looking
back at the number of children these families had. In today’s society, you may
receive a strange look if you say you want more than 2 kids. Back then children
were considered a blessing, and of course, help you could count on with the
demanding work that needed to be done. We are expecting our 3rd
child to be born the beginning of January, maybe the end of December. I have
had a couple of comments, even when we were just considering another child,
‘Isn’t 2 enough?’, ‘Won’t you have your hands full?’, etc. But in deciding what
to do, those thoughts did not enter, only, ‘If God is willing to bless us
again, then we would be happy to take on however many He wants to give us.’ I
believe this is how our forefathers viewed having more children, as is evident
each time you look at a chart from George at the beginning.
